The paintings are remembrances of the spaces of a house in Portinho da Arrábida, that both the painter and the poet knew well, but, as in many of Manuel Amado’s works, they abandon the real reference, transforming it into an evocation of interwoven memories. So say the first verses of Pedro Tamen's poem: "In the beginning, you get caught in a sea / that the eyes previously transformed / in a non-existent sea / out of memory.”
The series The House by the Sea is composed of 12 paintings, all made in 1992. It was exhibited in 1994 at Casa Fernando Pessoa, in Lisbon, under the motto "a poet | a painter” together with Pedro Tamen, who made the poem with the title "How to Build a House”, in dialogue with Manuel Amado's paintings.
